IPFA/BCA Global Symposium on the Future for Blood and Plasma Donation, Sacramento, USA

Inaugural meeting highlights the international importance of and opportunities for increased plasma collection from VNRBD

The inaugural IPFA/BCA Symposium was held in Sacramento, California on the 23 – 24 September with the objective of identifying actions necessary and opportunities available to increase the supply of donor plasma and maintain safe and secure supply of blood components to meet future patient needs.

This truly international event maintained the IPFA tradition of promoting inclusive scientific discussion, debate and cooperation amongst professionals and patient organisations with an interest in and responsibility for a safe and secure supply of blood and plasma products throughout the world. The meeting was attended by 170 delegates from 22 countries.

We are grateful to our co-organiser BCA (Blood Centres of America) and local host BloodSource for their vision in identifying the need for and importance of the meeting and for their energetic and enthusiastic contributions to its planning and organization.

We were honoured that Ms D. Dooley, Secretary of Health, California was able to  open the meeting with an authoritative, knowledgeable and enthusiastic address – setting the scene for the wider programme which included:

  • Current regional and global product supply and opportunities for increased plasma supply from blood centres
  • Clinical developments and demand for plasma derived medicinal products
  • Patient perspectives on safety and availability of plasma products
  • Quality, regulatory and donor safety issues in developed and developing countries
  • Experience with large scale plasmapheresis in blood centres and its contribution to National/Regional ‘Strategic Independence
  • New and emerging technical and clinical developments in the use of plasma and PDMP’s
  • The management of risk in the blood/plasma product supply
  • The contribution of supporting industries to the goal of a safe and secure plasma and blood component supply.

IPFA was delighted to have been able to offer “Fellowships” to enable the following people to attend the meeting:

  • Dr Levan Avalishvili - Georgia
  • Dr Andrea Zucchi - Argentina
  • QFB Clotilde Estrada – Mexico
  • Mr David Mvere - Zimbabwe
  • Dr Timothy Ekwere - Nigeria

Their individual reports and impressions from the meeting are now available on the IPFA website. We were pleased to welcome them to the meeting and thank them for their valuable comments and insights.

This two day Symposium was characterized by authoritative presentations, interesting and focused discussion and a spirit of cooperation between all stakeholders to safeguard and improve patient access to essential plasma derivatives and blood components in all regions of the world. It is hoped that the meeting will result in new initiatives to increase the plasma supply from blood centers in America and elsewhere.

We are deeply indebted to all who contributed to the success of the meeting including our commercial sponsors without whose support the meeting would not be possible.

Building on the momentum from this inaugural meeting we now look forward to welcoming you all to our 2nd IPFA/BCA Symposium on the Future for Blood and Plasma Donation which will be held in Dallas, Texas, USA in September 2015.
