In the field of blood and plasma products changes occur frequently and continuously, as in any other medical sector. The changes touch on all aspects of the industry. Politics, laws and regulations, and science and technology are and will be in constant development. "Quality and safety" and also "supply" have become permanent priorities for all stakeholders. For this reason IPFA since 1994 has organized and co-organized over 40 international meetings and events.

The main aim was and is to provide platforms for information sharing among all IPFA member organisations and IPFA experts and also to further develop relationships with the international regulatory community.

The first workshop on screening and testing using Nucleic Acid Amplification technology (PCR/NAT) was organized in 1994, as a result of the rapid emergence of this technology and its potential to increase the safety of blood and plasma products.

Other meetings organised by IPFA have addressed donor epidemiology, collection of blood and plasma, manufacture of plasma derivatives and meetings on TSE/vCJD. IPFA has a strong tradition of promoting international scientific and policy debate on these key issues and will continue to do so in the future.
